Are there any states that do not require auto insurance?
Is auto insurance or another form of financial responsibility required in all 50 states? I'm moving to a new state and want to know if the insurance laws will change.

While car insurance is legally optional, if you choose to buy car insurance you have a minimum amount required.
New Hampshire requires:
- Bodily injury liability coverage per person: $25,000
- Bodily injury liability coverage per accident: $50,000
- Property damage liability coverage: $25,000
- Personal injury protection $1000 for medical expenses only
- Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage must match your liability limits ($25,000 per person and $50,000 per accident).
New Hampshire still requires drivers to pay for property and bodily damages if they cause a car accident. You can pay for this out of pocket or with your insurance coverage.

New Hampshire Automobile Insurance Plan
.Virginia requires:
- Bodily injury liability coverage per person: $25,000
- Bodily injury liability coverage per accident: $50,000
- Property damage liability coverage: $20,000
- Personal injury protection: Optional
- Uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage must match your liability limits
In place of insurance, Virginia drivers can pay the DMV $500 to drive uninsured. However, if you cause an accident, you are financially responsible for any damages.
