I’m intrigued by the future and feasibility of self-driving cars throughout the country. However, I live in California and I want to know more about how the government is adapting to the future of self-driving cars. In California, are self-driving cars legal?

. While the state hasn’t added any laws in the past five years, they have implemented four laws and bills regarding automated vehicles:- Self-driving vehicles can be tested on public roads, provided they meet the safety standards of the highway patrol.
- The Contra Costa Transportation Authority (nearSan Francisco) is allowed to test self-driving cars to check for their efficiency and feasibility on public roads.
- The California Department of Transportation must use part of its budget to accommodate EVs and self-driving cars in terms of infrastructure.
- The testing of self-driving vehicles is allowed with less than 100 feet of distance between them, but only with a licensed operator behind the controls.
