Are Ford SUVs good cars?
I want to buy my college-bound daughter a good used (but fairly new) SUV. I’m really not sure where to start, but I’ve seen some affordable Ford Expeditions for sale in my area. Are Ford SUVs good cars?

A practical SUV is a great option for a safe vehicle to take to college. Plus, it can haul homework and dirty laundry when she wants to visit home! But whether or not Ford SUVs are good cars is a very delicate question.
It all depends on which model and year you purchase. And those decisions will come down to what you specifically want for your daughter’s vehicle. Before you buy, take some time to focus on a few specifics, like:
- Passenger capacity
- Cargo space
- Drivetrain
- Fuel efficiency
Identifying which features take priority will help you pick between something small, like a Ford EcoSport, or something much larger, like an Expedition. You should know, though, that overall, expert ratings on Ford SUVs are mixed.
For instance, despite its huge popularity, the Ford Expedition hasn’t received a rating higher than 7.5 out of 10 from Car and Driver for the last five years. The EcoSport performed miserably, getting just 3.5 out of 10.
Another popular model, the Edge, received a higher score of 8 out of 10 in 2018 but has since declined in approval. The bottom line is Ford’s SUV quality isn’t guaranteed, but there are some reliable and strong-performing models out there. You’ll just have to research the best options for you.
