Are electric cars good off road?
I want to buy an electric car, but I also like to drive off road into remote areas to enjoy nature. Is there an EV for me, or are they all too fragile for rough terrain?

It’s not surprising that a nature-lover like yourself would consider buying an
electric car
. Thankfully, there are a few models that can handle off-road driving just fine. In fact, a few things about electric powertrains make them better suited for this kind of thing than gas engines.
Electric vehicles generally have higher torque and faster acceleration than their fossil fuel-burning counterparts. That makes them better equipped for getting you out of sticky situations.
But a well-seasoned offroader like yourself knows that torque and pep can’t do the job alone. A properly prepared off-road vehicle also needs all-wheel drive (AWD) and sufficient ground clearance.
A lot of the higher-end EVs offer AWD, but you wouldn’t want to take most of them off paved surfaces. The Rivian R1T and R1S are probably the two models available right now that are best suited for your kind of driving.
But this year will see many more EVs join that list. The Ford F-150 Lightning will likely be the first, but Fisker, Jeep, Mercedes, Nissan, Subaru, Tesla, and Toyota all plan to release EVs with sufficient lift in 2022.
And if you’re into Land Rover-level extravagance, you’ll be able to spend over $100,000 on a Hummer EV, Bollinger, or Canoo by the year’s end.
