Not all Toyota Highlanders are AWD. Instead, the Highlander comes with standard front-wheel drive on all five of its trims. However, you can add AWD to all trims as an available option. AWD on the L, LE, and XLE trims costs an additional $1,600 while AWD on the Limited and Platinum trims costs $1,950.
Although you get the benefit of improved handling, AWD also lowers the fuel economy of the Toyota Highlander. Front-wheel drive offers 29 mpg on the highway and 21 mpg in the city. Conversely, an AWD Toyota Highlander only gets 27 mpg on the highway and 20 mpg in the city.
