If someone else is ticketed while driving my car, will my auto insurance premium go up?
Will I have to pay more for insurance if my friend got a ticket in my car? I let them borrow it for a few days and they got pulled over for speeding.

“Your premium should not go up if your friend got a speeding ticket while driving your car. Phew!
Auto insurance premiums are based on your driving record, as well as the records of any other drivers listed on your policy. If you give someone permission to drive your vehicle but they’re not listed on your insurance policy, it won’t affect your insurance premium if they get a ticket.
That being said, it’s important to remember a few things before lending out your car to friends:
- Policies may differ. Some providers may increase your premium if they find out you’re lending your car to others.
- Not all tickets are the same. While speeding tickets follow the driver, parking tickets follow the car. Whether or not the ticket impacts your premium may depend on the type of ticket it is.
- Accidents will impact your premium. Because auto insurance typically follows the car, any accidents will show up on your insurance record and likely raise your premium.
