Does home insurance cover slab leaks?

I'm starting to suspect that I've got a slab leak on my property. It'll be expensive to fix and I don't know if I can afford it right now. Will insurance help cover the cost?

Questions about foundation and slab leak coverage can be very tricky to answer because there are a lot of variables. First, check to make sure loss to the foundation and water damage are covered by your policy. If either one is excluded, then the slab leak is not covered.
If both are included, then it depends on if there is damage to the home and if it was “sudden and accidental.” If the adjuster can see that the leak happened slowly over time, due to poor home maintenance or an excluded peril (like tree roots intruding into the slab), then it is not covered. If the damage was hidden and not due to neglect, then you are covered.
