Do I need to have car insurance before I get my driver's license?

I'm about to get my driver's license (whoooo!) but I don't own my own car. I don't have car insurance right now. Do I need it before I take my test?

Great question! No, you do not need to have car insurance before you get your driver’s license.
Obtaining your license means that you have proven to your state that you are eligible to be on the road with other drivers and drive safely. Car insurance is a way to prove financial responsibility in case you cause an accident.
You are required to have car insurance if you own a vehicle. If you are a new driver, you may be covered under someone else’s car insurance, such as a parent’s. After you get your driver’s license and obtain a vehicle, be sure to get car insurance that meets the requirements for your state.
