Can a young driver on his parents’ plan find cheaper insurance after an accident?

I'm a 19-year-old guy, I currently drive my parents' car, and I'm covered under their insurance policy. I got into an at-fault accident a year ago, so our insurance rates have shot up. Can my family land significantly lower premiums elsewhere?

It can be hard to find affordable coverage when you’re a young driver and have had an accident. It’s always a good idea to get your own insurance policy as soon as you’re financially able to do so. It will cost more at first, but the length of your insurance history is a strong insurance rating factor.
The longer you have continuous coverage under your own name, the lower your rates will be in the long term. As you get closer to age 25 — and if you’ve maintained a good driving record — the rates will get even better!
Once you get your own policy, in most cases, your parents can remove you from their policy and see a substantial decrease in their rates.
