How were the SUVs rated for safety?
According to Car and Driver, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) awards Top Safety Pick+ ratings to vehicles that score at least a "Good" rating on six crash tests. It must also earn at least a rating of "Good" or "Acceptable" for its headlights, and "Advanced" or "Superior" for its front crash-prevention systems.
Many of the vehicles that scored Top Safety Pick+ also have five-star crash-test ratings from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). In short, if a car is featured on Car and Driver’s list, it's known to be safe.
For 2021, the IIHS gave 90 new vehicles Top Safety Pick ratings. Almost all of the Mazda SUVs took home a Top Safety Pick+ award.
The Mazda CX-3 is one of the safest cars in its class
One Mazda SUV stands out for vehicles in its size range: the 2021 Mazda CX-3. Not only is this car the smallest in Mazda's SUV collection, but it's also among the safest subcompact crossovers. IIHS awarded it scores of "Good" and "Superior," while the NHTSA gave it a crash-test rating of five stars.
The CX-3 features airbags on both the front and side-curtain to shield passengers from the steering wheel and ceiling of the vehicle in an accident. Other safety features include lane departure warnings and cruise control. The car also has automated emergency braking with the ability to sense oncoming pedestrians.
Mazda's entire SUV lineup made the cut
Mazda is clearly doing something right when it comes to safety. The majority of their SUVs made Car and Driver’s list, which includes these models:
- 2021 Mazda CX-3
- 2021 Mazda CX-30
- 2021 Mazda CX-5
- 2021 Mazda CX-9
The only Mazda SUV that didn’t receive a Top Safety Pick+ rating was the MX-5 Miata. As for the others, they vary in style but perform well in terms of safety.
The CX-30 has a poor headlight score for CX-30 premiums built before October 2020. Other than that, it received a score of "Good" on all six IIHS crash tests and a "Superior" rating for its front crash prevention systems. The CX-5 received a rating of "Good" for all crash tests, and scored an "Advanced" for its pedestrian crash avoidance system.
Finally, the biggest Mazda SUV, the CX-9, scored a "Good" rating on all crash tests and for its headlights. Like the CX-5, it received an "Advanced" rating for its pedestrian crash avoidance system.
