How Monroe County property taxes are determined

Monroe County Assessor's Office
Counties in Illinois determine their own tax rates. Generally speaking, your tax bill is based on two factors—the equalized assessed value (EAV) of your property, and the county’s budget for the current year.  Most property in Illinois is assessed at 33.33 % of the fair market value. Monroe County performs property assessments in four-year cycles.

appeal the assessment
with the Monroe County assessor's office.
Some homeowners may qualify for a
homestead exemption or other savings programs
under Illinois law.

How to pay property taxes in Monroe County 

Monroe County property taxes are printed and mailed around August of each year.Tax payments are due in installments, with the first payment due September 24th and the second payment due November 5th
Monroe County accepts payments online, in person, by phone, by mail, by drop box, and through participating banks
  • Online: Monroe County provides a
    convenient online payment portal
    . Convenience fees apply. Credit and debit cards are charged 2.25% with a $2 minimum. E-checks are charged $1 per transaction.
  • In person: In-person payments may be made at the
    Monroe County Treasurer’s Office
    Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm. Cash, money orders, and personal and cashier’s checks are accepted. The Treasurer’s Office is located across from the Information Desk on the main floor of the Monroe County Courthouse.
  • Drop box: A drop box is located on the Market Street side of the Monroe County Courthouse. Look for the landscaped island facing the east side of the Courthouse. The drop box is checked by an employee of the Treasurer’s Office every morning for payments. If you use the drop box, please enclose your payment in an envelope marked “Treasurer’s Office” and include your payment stub with your check or money order. If you do not have your payment stub, please include the address of the property or the parcel number of the property for which you are paying taxes.
  • By phone: The Collector’s Office will take credit, debit, and e-Check payments over the phone. Call Auto Agent at 833-939-0897. Convenience fees apply.
  • Bank payments: Many banks in Monroe County accept tax payments on or before the specified installment’s due date. Following is a list of participating banks: Associated Bank, Dieterich Bank, Central Bank, First National Bank of Waterloo, Midlands State Bank, State Bank of Waterloo, FCB Bank
  • By mail: Make checks payable to Monroe County Treasurer/Collector and mail to
