How to replace a lost driver’s license in Florida

So your wallet got stolen, or you left your ID at the bar during last night’s happy hour. It’s important to file for a replacement right away because driving without a license could land you in serious legal trouble. Luckily, the process is simple.

Replacing a lost Florida license online

Just go online to the
MyDMV portal
run by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV). From there, you can
check your license status
(if you know the ID number) and replace a lost or stolen license
You’ll need to provide:
  • DMV credentials, such as your license or license plate number
  • Proof of ID via your date of birth and Social Security number (SSN)
  • Address information (additional fees might apply if it’s different from the address on your lost license)
To replace your lost Florida license online, you’ll pay a $25 replacement fee as well as a $2 processing fee. You’ll receive your license in the mail in two to three weeks

Replacing a lost Florida license in person

In some cases, replacing a lost license online isn’t an option. That’s likely to be true if your identifying information has changed, or if you used the online service the last time you renewed your license.
It’s also typically faster to replace a lost license in person, so if it’s an option, head to
your nearest FLHSMV location
Check the FLHSMV’s
What To Bring
page for a detailed list of the documents you may need to replace your license based on citizenship and immigration status. In general, you can expect to need:
  • Proof of identity (e.g., a birth certificate or passport)
  • Social Security documents (e.g., your Social Security card, W-2, or 1099 form)
  • Proof of address (e.g., a mortgage statement, utility bill, or
    car insurance bill
    )
You can fill out all the necessary paperwork and pay your $25 replacement fee at the DMV. You’ll still need to wait a few weeks to receive your license in the mail, but you’ll be issued a temporary document so that you can continue to drive legally.

What if you lose your Florida license out of state?

If you lose your Florida license while traveling or living out of state, replacing it can be a slightly longer process—but it’s still not impossible.
Start by reaching out to the FLHSMV by mail or email to request a temporary permit. This permit, which should last 90 days, can cover you until you’re able to get to a physical FLHSMV office.
Write to the following address to request your temporary permit, or use
