So, how much oil does a Toyota 5.7 engine need?

What kind of oil does a Toyota 5.7 need?
Now that we know how much oil a Toyota 5.7 engine needs, let's talk about oil type. Not all oils are created equal: different engines will require different types of oil with their own chemical makeup, so it’s important to get the right kind of oil for your engine.
The Toyota company recommends using Toyota Genuine SAE 0W-20 Full-Synthetic motor oil for the 5.7 engine. That’s a lot of words for an oil type, so let’s break it down.
The numbers in the oil grade refer to the oil’s viscosity, or how thick the oil is. The “W” stands for winter, meaning the oil has winter certification for high performance in winter temperatures.
Oil flows differently at different temperatures, so the “0W” in your oil grade refers to how well the oil performs in winter conditions. The lower the number before the W, the better the oil’s viscosity in the cold.
The second number, “20”, refers to the oil’s performance in high temperatures. While 0W-20 performs very well in colder temperatures, it also does well in hot temperatures and can maintain its thin viscosity at over 212°F.
If you can’t find Toyota’s genuine 0W-20 for your 5.7 engine, there are a few other oil types that work pretty much just as well:
- Any other SAE 0W-20 outside the Toyota brand can fit the bill
- Any 5W-20 motor oil will work, but your winter performance won’t be as good. You may also risk voiding your car’s warranty if you use a different oil than what the manufacturer recommends

How often to change oil on a Toyota 5.7
Now that you know which oil to buy for your Toyota 5.7 engine, it’s time to change your oil—granted you’re due for an oil change, of course.
So how often should you change your oil? Toyota recommends an oil change for the 5.7 engine every 5,000 miles. If you don’t drive often, changing your oil every 6 months may be a better benchmark, since oil degrades over time no matter how often you drive.
However, if you’re using the recommended 0W-20 full-synthetic oil type, you may only need to change your oil every 7,500 to 10,000 miles. Synthetic oil types are slower to degrade, meaning you won’t have to change your oil as frequently.
But that’s a big range for the recommended life of your oil. It’s a good idea to check your oil level regularly and keep up with regular maintenance.
The following symptoms are signs that it’s time to change your oil.
- Change in oil color to dark brown or black (Clean oil is light brown or amber)
- Coarse or gritty feeling in the motor oil
- Strange noises coming from the engine, such as squeaking, screeching, or grating noises
- Unfamiliar smells, especially anything that smells like oil, smoke, or burning
- Changes in your vehicle’s performance

Once you’ve determined that your engine needs an oil change, it’s time to get your hands dirty. You’ll need a socket wrench, a drain pan, and a filter wrench to remove the oil filter. And of course, you’ll need a replacement filter and 8 quarts of premium 0W-20 engine oil.
To begin the oil change process, start by running your engine for a while until it gets up to operating temperature. Outside of the winter months, it should take no more than about 5 minutes to heat up your engine for maintenance.
Once you’re there, shut off your engine, open your hood, and follow these steps:
- Remove the oil fill cap
- Get under the engine and take off the oil drain bolt and washer, draining the old oil into the drain pan
- Take out the old oil filter and continue to let the oil drain
- Install the new filter
- Put the oil drain bolt back on using a new washer and tighten it to 29 lb-ft
- Refill the engine with your new oil and replace the fill cap
As you add your new oil, use your dipstick to make sure you’ve reached the appropriate level. Then you’re all set to run your engine for a few minutes to check for leaks. If you’ve done it correctly, your
oil pressure light
should turn off on your dashboard. The last step is to clean up. Importantly, do not dump the old oil into the garbage or onto the ground. Seal it in a tight container and take it to your local recycling center.
