background
Your Tesla Model S should maintain tire pressures of 38 to 45 pounds per square inch (PSI) for the front tires and 40 to 45 psi for the rear tires.
A key to safe driving is maintaining the correct air pressure in your vehicle’s tires. If the air pressure is off in the tires, it can negatively impact your fuel economy, increase the difficulty of steering, and cause a risky blowout. All of these actions can be costly and cause major strife.
That’s why the

What is the right tire pressure for a Tesla Model S?

Tesla recommends that you keep the Model S’s front tires between 38 and 45 psi and the rear tires between 40 and 45 psi. There’s a sticker on your center door pillar with more information on the correct tire pressure—often it’s listed as 42 psi.
It’s important to inflate your tires to this psi regardless of what is printed on the tire. This is so your Tesla can perform optimally.
Different types of tires, like off-road or seasonal tires, often need to be inflated to specific psi for the best performance. This doesn’t apply to Teslas, though. If you purchase a specialty tire for your Tesla Model S, check with the Tesla service center to find out what psi you should inflate your tires to.

How to check Tesla Model S tire pressure

If you need help checking your Tesla Model S tire pressure, your Tesla’s menu can help. The tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) is available on all Teslas. The system will alert you to over- or under-inflated tires with the tire pressure light.
Use the right or left steering wheel buttons to display Car Status, which will list your tire pressure. You can change how tire pressure is monitored (bars or psi) by touching “Controls > Display > Tire Pressure.”
Keeping track of your Model 3’s tire pressure is inexpensive and easy, making it a breeze to help maintain your vehicle. You can also check your tire pressure the old-fashioned way by using a tire pressure gauge. Simply remove the valve stem cap on each tire and press the gauge onto the valve stem. You can do this at home with your own gauge, or use a gauge provided at your gas station’s air filling station.
If your TPMS fails to alert you for your tire pressure being off, your vehicle definitely will. If you’re seeing decreased performance, an uneven ride, or troublesome steering, the issue could be with your tire pressure. Check your tire pressure manually if you’re in doubt.

How often should you check tire pressure?

It’s important to check your tire pressure at least once a month and especially before going on a major trip.

How to tell if your Tesla Model S needs new tires

Tesla recommends you change your tires at least once every six years. You’ll need to change them sooner if you notice signs of wear or damage while checking your tire pressure. Keep an eye out for low tread depth or cracks and bulges in your tires—these are signs you need new tires.
You can monitor your tread depth by using the penny method. If you insert a US penny head-first into the tire tread and see the top of Lincoln’s head, your treads are too worn to drive safely.

How to reset the Tesla Model S tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) light

Sometimes your TPMS can malfunction, resulting in a tire pressure warning light that won’t turn off. If this light won’t shut off even after you’ve checked your psi and adjusted the tire pressure, it’s time to
reset your TPMS
.
Your TPMS won’t always turn off after adjusting the psi in your tires. If this is the case, you’ll need to drive at a speed over 15 mph for 20 minutes or longer to activate the TPMS. Once the system is activated, it will recalibrate to your adjusted psi and should turn off.
If your tire pressure light flashes for one minute after turning on your Model S, it could indicate a problem with your TPMS that requires the attention of an authorized Tesla service technician.
