You’ll need a few essential car tools and supplies to properly change your oil: a socket wrench, a drain pan, and a filter wrench to remove the current filter. You’ll also need to buy a replacement filter and five quarts of Ford’s recommended motor oil.

To start, run your engine for a few minutes until it reaches operating temperature. In normal weather, this should take about five minutes. Once the engine is warm, shut it down, pop the hood, and follow these steps to change your oil:

Remove the oil fill cap

Slide underneath the engine, remove the oil drain bolt and washer, and drain the old oil into the drain pan

Remove the old oil filter while letting the oil drain

Install a new filter

With a new washer, replace the oil drain bolt, tightening it to 29 lb-ft

With new oil, refill the engine and replace the fill cap

After changing your oil, it’s a good idea to turn on your car and let your engine run for about 30 seconds before you check the oil level. This will give you a more accurate measurement, and you’ll be able to top it off if necessary.
