2017 Honda CR-V engine oil capacity

The 2017 Honda CR-V hit the market with two available engines, and the amount of oil you need for an
oil and filter change
will depend on which one is in your SUV.
If you bought one of the more affordable CR-Vs, chances are you’ve got a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine under the hood. If that’s the case, you're going to need about 4.7 quarts of oil (or 4.4 liters).
The higher-end 2017 Honda CR-Vs instead came equipped with a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine that has a smaller oil capacity. If you’ve got a CR-V with this engine, you’ll only need 3.7 quarts (or 3.5 liters).
As a note, make sure you don’t confuse your
engine’s displacement
(in this case 1.5-liters or 2.4 liters) with the oil tank capacity. Confusing these two numbers could mean using the wrong amount of oil and damaging your car.

What kind of oil does a 2017 Honda CR-V need?

So, you’ve got the amount of oil, now it’s time to talk about the type. The 2017 Honda CR-V owner’s manual recommends changing your oil using Honda Genuine Motor Oil 0W-20.
Wondering what those strange numbers mean? They are meant to represent the oil’s viscosity at low temperatures (W means winter), as well as at high temperatures. The ideal oil can do its job in extreme cold and heat.
Keep in mind that Honda Genuine Oil is usually fully synthetic, which means it is manmade and lasts longer than conventional oil.

How often to change the oil on a 2017 Honda CR-V

Now you know the type of oil you need to get and the amount you need to buy. Next up, it’s time to learn how often you need to change your oil.
If you’re using conventional oil, general wisdom suggests that you should be changing it every 3,000 to 5,000 miles of driving as part of your
basic car maintenance schedule
. But if you don’t use your car a lot, changing your oil every six months might be a better bet.
If you’re using synthetic oil, you can go a bit longer before you need to change it. Pure synthetic oil can last over 10,000 miles, and blends can last over 7,500 miles.
It should be said that relying on such wide ranges isn’t a recipe for success when it comes to car maintenance. Instead, you should check your oil levels often and keep an eye out for the following signs that you need to switch it out:
  • The oil in your car is a dark brown or black color
  • Your engine is making strange noises
  • You smell smoke or something burning

How to change your oil and filter

Having the right products and knowing when your oil needs to be changed is one thing, but doing it right is just as important. Ideally, someone can show you how to change your car's oil the first time, or you can find a video online
However, if you just want a brief rundown, Jerry has you covered.
Start by getting together the essential car maintenance supplies. You’re going to need a socket wrench, a drain pan, and a filter wrench. You’ll also need your new oil, a replacement filter, and ideally a new washer for the drain bolt.
Run your engine for about five minutes before changing your oil. Turn off the engine when you are ready to get started. Then, follow these steps:
  • Take off the oil fill cap
  • Remove the drain bolt and the washer so the oil will begin draining
  • Remove the old oil filter
  • Wait for the oil to finish draining, then install the new filter
  • Replace the drain bolt with the new washer
  • Fill the engine with new oil and replace the cap
You can double-check the amount of oil you’ve added using a dipstick. After changing your oil, it’s a good idea to turn on your car and let your engine run for about 30 seconds before you check the oil level. This will give you a more accurate measurement, and you’ll be able to top it off if necessary.
Next, run the engine for a few minutes to make sure there are no leaks. If you did everything right, the
oil pressure light
on your CR-V's dashboard should turn off.
Finally, do not throw the old oil out in a conventional trash can. You need to pour it into a container and take it to the nearest recycling center.

Don’t forget regular insurance policy maintenance

Now that you know the ins and outs of your 2017 Honda CR-V’s oil capacity, you can keep the car running smoothly for the foreseeable future. Another way to save money on your car expenses and protect your ride is to revisit your insurance policy.
