Before diving into anything else, let’s tackle the main reason we’re here: what is the 2012 Nissan Rogue engine oil capacity?
The 2012 Rogue has a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine that requires 4.9 quarts or 4.6 liters of motor oil. Yes, a 2.5-liter engine needs 4.6 liters of oil. Yes! These numbers may seem like they are talking about the same thing, but they aren’t. The 2.5 liters describes the engine’s displacement, or the volume that the engine cylinders occupy, while 4.6 liters is the engine oil capacity.
They are not interchangeable values so make sure you make the distinction!
What kind of oil does a 2012 Nissan Rogue need?
Okay but…4.9 quarts or 4.6 liters of what kind of oil? Great question! Not every engine will work well with every kind of engine oil so you’ll need to grab a specific oil grade—SAE 5W-30, in this case—from the store.
The recommended oil grade for a vehicle clues us into the oil viscosity levels that are the most ideal for that specific engine in different temperatures. The 2012 Nissan Rogue, for instance, needs oil that has a viscosity level of 5 at the engine’s cold start temperature (denoted by the W which stands for “winter”), and a level of 30 at the engine’s piping hot normal operating temperature of around 212°F.
The SAE stands for Society of Automotive Engineers, which is the oil-grading entity of the automotive world.
Now, you may be wondering if using conventional oil is better for your engine than synthetic oil or vice versa, but it doesn’t matter too much which one you use for your Nissan Rogue. As long as you use 5W-30 oil, your engine will perform without excess wear and tear from the motor oil.
How often to change the oil on a 2012 Nissan Rogue
You won’t have to shell out for 4.9 quarts of 5W-30 every week or even every month!
Nissan recommends that you change your 2012 Nissan Rogue’s oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles when using conventional oil. If you’re using synthetic oil, you should change your oil every 7,500 to 10,000 miles.
However, your oil change schedule may be more or less frequent depending on your driving habits and terrain. Long daily commutes in the mountains generate more wear faster than bi-monthly trips to the grocery store.
With any driving habit, though, you’ll want to check on your oil’s quality and level about once a month. Here are symptoms of poor oil quality or low oil levels:
Black or dark brown oil. Dark oil is a sign of contamination. Clean oil will be close to amber or light brown in color
Less than smooth texture. Contamination in the oil can show up as debris or sludge. If your oil texture looks like anything but syrup, it’s probably time to change the oil
Smoky smell. Low levels or poor quality of oil can generate a smoking, burning oil smell
Loud engine noises. Unfamiliar knocking, clanging, banging, or other noises near your engine may signify that it’s time for an oil change
Decreased vehicle performance. Take note if your fuel economy is worsening or the engine stutters.

How to change your oil and oil filter
Think it’s time to change your oil? Grab your materials:
4.9 quarts of 5W-30 engine oil
Start your oil change process by getting the engine up to its normal operating temperature. Idle the vehicle for five to 20 minutes or drive around the block a couple of times. Once you’re confident that the engine is warmed up enough, turn the ignition off while you’re on level ground. Then pop the hood and follow these steps:
Get under the engine with the drain pan and socket wrench and remove the oil drain bolt to allow the old oil to drain into the drain pan
Remove the old oil filter
After the old oil has completely drained out, install the new oil filter
Replace the oil drain bolt
Pour 4.9 quarts of 5W-30 into the engine and replace the oil fill cap
After changing your oil, it’s a good idea to turn on your car and let your engine run for about 30 seconds before you check the oil level. This will give you a more accurate measurement, and you’ll be able to top it off if necessary.
Pull out the oil dipstick to confirm you have the right amount of oil added, then turn your engine on for a few minutes. Check under the engine bay to make sure there are no leaks, and you’re done!
Then, pour the old oil into a sealable container and bring it to a recycling center for proper disposal. Don’t dump oil on the ground or in your trash.
Don’t forget regular insurance policy maintenance
We can all agree on how important regular oil changes are for your vehicle’s maintenance, now let’s talk about how important regular car insurance policy maintenance is for your vehicle!
