But first, it’s important to remember that engine oil is a hazardous material, so you’ll need to be prepared to dispose of your old oil in an environmentally responsible way—which doesn’t involve dumping it down the drain or throwing it away with your regular trash.
Your city might have a drop-off location for used motor oil, or you might be able to dispose of it at a local repair shop. Different locations will have different preferences on how it should be contained and how it should be dropped off.
Once that’s settled, it’s time to gather your car tools and supplies for your Hyundai Sonata’s oil change! You’ll need:
- Socket wrench
- Oil filter wrench (a tool that’s designed to remove old oil filters)
- Replacement drain plug gasket
- Replacement filter
- Fresh oil
- Drain pan
- Rubber gloves
- Clean-up towel(s)
To get started, start your engine and let it run for a few minutes, which will heat up the engine oil and make it easier to drain. A good indicator is to run the engine until the coolant temperature gauge rises just above the lowest mark. Then, lift up the hood, and do the following:
- Unscrew the oil fill cap
- Underneath your Hyundai Sonata, unscrew the drain plug and allow the old engine oil to empty into the drain pan
- After the oil has finished draining, replace the drain plug with a new gasket, tightening it to 25.3-32.5 lb-ft
- Use an oil filter wrench to remove the old engine oil filter
- Wipe up excess dirt and grime around the filter’s contact surface as needed
- Install the new filter following the package’s instructions, lubricating the filter’s gasket with engine oil if needed. Tighten the filter to 8.7-11.6 lb-ft
- Returning to the hood of your car, refill the engine with fresh oil
- Check for any leaks as needed
- Replace the engine oil fill cap
One last step—turn your engine on for a few minutes again and shut it off. After a few minutes, use your dipstick to check the engine oil again, adding more as needed.
Once you’ve reached the proper oil level, you should be all set!
