. 2006 Acura TSX engine oil capacity
Before you can change your oil, you’ll need to know what your 2006 Acura TSX’s oil capacity is so you know how much motor oil to buy.
A 2006 Acura TSX’s 2.4-liter V6 engine has a total oil capacity of 4.4 quarts or roughly 4.2 liters. This is not to be confused with your engine’s displacement
, or the 2.4-liter volume its cylinders take up—oil capacity only ever refers to the amount of oil needed for each oil change. Remember: your engine’s displacement is not the same as its oil capacity, so never assume that their numbers are interchangeable. What kind of oil does a 2006 Acura TSX need?
Now that you know how much oil to give your 2006 Acura TSX, you’ll need to figure out which type of motor oil to buy, as not all motor oil is the same. Following the manufacturer’s recommendations in your owner’s manual, an Acura TSX requires premium-grade 5W-30 synthetic motor oil.
But what do those numbers actually mean? The first number you see, the “5,” refers to the oil’s winter rating and means that its viscosity is low in very cold temperatures, whereas the “30” tells us that this oil is still pretty thin even at temperatures of 212°F or more.
In practice, any oil with these ratings is an oil that will perform well in cold-weather conditions, as lower viscosity means less wear and tear
on your engine. While it's best to stick to the owner's manual recommendation of 5W-30 engine oil, it is also ok to use a 10W-30 oil if the temperature in your area never goes below 20ºF (-7ºC).
How often to change oil on a 2006 Acura TSX
Now that you’re familiar with the type and amount of engine oil your 2006 Acura TSX needs, it’s time to figure out when that oil needs to be changed.
Generally speaking, Acura recommends that you change your oil every 3,000 to 5,000 miles, especially if you’re using conventional oil
—if you decide to go with a synthetic, you may only need to change your oil every 7,000 to 10,000 miles. That doesn’t mean, however, that you shouldn’t check your oil
before those intervals—in fact, it’s recommended that you check your oil level at least once a month to avoid potentially damaging your engine. It’s also a good idea to keep an eye out for the following signs that your oil needs changing sooner rather than later: The motor oil feels gritty
Color has changed from light amber to dark brown or black
Your vehicle’s performance wanes
An oily, smoky, or burning smell coming from the engine
Abnormal noises from the engine
How to change your oil and oil filter
If you’ve determined that it’s time for an oil change
, gather the following tools: a socket wrench, drain pan, and a filter wrench that’s designed to remove the old oil filter. Of course, you’ll also need to buy a replacement filter and 5 quarts of synthetic 5W-30 motor oil as well. Now that you’ve got everything you need, start your vehicle and let it run for a while until it reaches normal operating temperature—when temperatures are average, this shouldn’t take more than five minutes. Once the engine has come up to temperature, shut it off, open the hood, and follow these steps:
Place the drain pan underneath the oil drain hole and remove the drain bolt and washer with your socket wrench. Let the oil drain into the pan below.
Use the filter wrench to remove the old oil filter while waiting for all of the oil to drain.
Install the new oil filter.
Replace the drain bolt and install a new washer. Tighten to 29 lb-ft.
Refill your engine with the new oil and then replace the fill cap.
Once you’ve replaced the oil, use a dipstick to make sure enough oil was added. If the oil level is good, run the engine for a few minutes and inspect for leaks. As long as you did everything correctly, the oil pressure light
on your dashboard should switch off. After changing your oil, it’s a good idea to turn on your car and let your engine run for about 30 seconds before you check the oil level. This will give you a more accurate measurement, and you’ll be able to top it off if necessary.
Finally, it’s time to dispose of the old oil. You’ll want to empty the drain pan into a sealable container and take it to your local recycling center—never dump it out on the ground or empty it into a garbage bin.
