Chrysler has never made a vehicle model that features butterfly doors. However, there were a few Chryslers that have had other alternative door designs, particularly suicide doors. If you want a Chrysler with doors that open vertically, you’ll need to mod it.
Proper “butterfly” door kits are not very common. Most of the vertical door kits that you find online will be referred to as scissor doors or vertical lambo doors. We’ll go over the nuances between these terms, and we’ll also talk about how you can get some snazzy bolt-on Lambo doors for your Chrysler
. What Chrysler has butterfly doors?
No Chrysler model comes with butterfly doors.
There was one Chrysler concept car that had scissor doors. The Portofino, made through a joint effort with Lamborghini—which Chrysler had acquired in 1987—had front scissor doors and suicide scissor doors at the rear.
The Chrysler Eight was an early example of a vehicle with suicide doors, which are doors that open at a hinge at the back of the door, rather than the front, as seen on most cars. The Chrysler Eight would become the Chrysler Royal in 1932, and the Chrysler Airflow, introduced in 1934 would enter the scene soon after, also featuring suicide doors.

What are butterfly doors?
Let’s take a minute to talk about what we’re actually referring to when we talk about “butterfly doors”—and what this term usually doesn’t refer to.
Technically speaking, butterfly doors are vertical doors that attach to a car’s A-pillar, usually at a single point under the bottom of the windshield. The thing that sets butterfly doors apart from other vertical door systems is the way they swing when they open. Butterfly doors open up and out. Think about the motion butterfly’s wings make when they fold up above the insect’s body. The most notable examples of butterfly doors are the Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale and the Toyota
Sera. Sometimes people will mix up butterfly doors with scissor doors. Scissor doors have a similar design, because they attach at the same point on a car’s A-pillar as butterfly doors do. However, the notable difference is that scissor doors rotate vertically, straight upward, rather than also opening out away from the body. When you see companies advertising their vertical lambo door conversion kits, they’re usually a scissor door design, since these types of doors are very commonly associated with various Lamborghini models. You’ll often see them simply referred to as Lamborghini doors, even if they’re not on an actual Lambo.
Another often-confused vertical door design concept that you’ll see on luxury and classic models is the gull wing door. These doors are hinged at the top of the door and swing out and up on a single axle from this hinge. You’ll recognize these types of doors from Back to the Future’s DMC DeLorean, the classic Mercedes-Benz 300-SL, and the more modern Tesla Model X
. You can think of butterfly doors as a combination between scissor doors and gull wing doors. We also already discussed suicide doors, which hinge at the back of the door. You might also recognize the term swan door, which refers to a mostly normal door that opens with a slight upward angle to allow doors on lower riding cars to clear curbs.
Can you add butterfly doors to a Chrysler?
There are a variety of companies that offer bolt-on kits for modified doors on various Chrysler models, like the Chrysler 300 SRT-8
and Chrysler Sebring
. However, most of these kits are scissor doors or Lambo doors, rather than proper butterfly doors. You might need to settle for bolt-on Lambo style doors instead of proper butterfly doors, since Lambo door hinges are much more common. Vertical door kits will usually include the doors themselves, mounting hardware that has been fitted to your Chrysler’s existing factory bolt pattern, and gas shocks. Vertical Doors, Inc.
Lambo doors are a good choice. This company does offer a design called ZLR doors for some models which model the doors from a Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren, but these types of doors are not available for any Chrysler models. VDI offers vertical lambo doors and hinge kits for vehicles in the USA, from major vehicle manufacturers like Dodge
or Chevrolet
to the likes of Honda
or Audi
. Now, even a Camaro
or Dodge Charger
can have Lambo doors. Vertical door kits for Chrysler models are priced around $1,500 to $2,000 USD, but remember that you’ll either need to install them yourself or pay a professional to do it for you.
MORE: How to modify a car
Does modifying your vehicle’s doors impact warranty and insurance?
Most likely, yes. You should always make sure that you understand terms of your warranty and car insurance
coverage. Sometimes you are allowed to make certain modifications and still retain specific forms of warranty, but in other cases, a modification as significant as aftermarket doors may void some warranties. Not only should you understand how much an aftermarket door modification will affect your warranty, you should also be aware that these mods might make your car more expensive to insure. Before upgrading your Chrysler with an aftermarket mod, contact your insurance company to see if you’ll need to update your auto insurance policy.
“Because I have a luxury car, I was more interested in finding better coverage than the exact price. Jerry
helped me upgrade my policy, and when my record is cleared next year, I will be using Jerry again to choose an even cheaper plan!” —Paige W.
