background
Although there are rumors of a compact Tesla car coming out in 2023, the smallest Tesla offering to date is the Model 3 midsize sedan.
When you think of the
Tesla
car brand, your first thought is likely “electric vehicles,” not “compact cars.” And for good reason! Tesla has yet to release a compact car, and the smallest vehicle in its lineup isn’t exactly small.
Let’s take a look at what we know so far about Tesla’s rumored compact car. We’ll also take a look at Tesla’s smaller options to tide you over!

2022 Tesla compact and subcompact car models

There are currently no Tesla compact or subcompact car offerings, but one is in the works! Here’s what we know so far about Tesla’s plans for a future compact car.

Tesla Model 2 (est. $25,000 MSRP)

Even though Tesla’s upcoming compact car will probably go by a different name, it’s expected to cost much less than previous Tesla vehicles. Although CEO Elon Musk has set a 2023 release date, this could also be pushed back depending on how production goes.
Some rumors about Tesla’s new compact car are intriguing. One is that it won’t have a traditional steering wheel. Another is that it will be manufactured in China.
Even though there are other Tesla projects still underway, such as the anticipated Cybertruck, it’s likely that the compact car will speed ahead in order to beat other car brands to the compact EV finish line. However, there already may be too much competition with models like the
Chevrolet Bolt
EV,
Volkswagen
ID.LIFE, and
Nissan LEAF
already on the shelf.
Here are some other tidbits about Tesla’s forthcoming entry-level compact car:
  • New tabless battery design
  • Lightweight construction
  • 180 miles of range
  • Fully autonomous driving mode

($48,440 MSRP): A more affordable EV option for the daily driver, this speedy car has 272 miles of range.
  • Tesla Model X
($122,440 MSRP): This high-tech model is sure to turn heads with its Falcon-wing rear doors and 351-mile driving range.
If you don’t mind wandering into crossover territory, the

is a slightly larger option for EV enthusiasts.
