Acura released the final model of the popular TL sports sedan in 2014, complete with a Special Edition package to be the stepping stone between the base trim and the Technology Package.
Acura is known for making comfy, reliable, and upscale cars no matter what genre—and the TL was a major player in the luxury sports sedan sector for nearly a decade. While the 2014 TL came with a top-notch interior and plenty of verve, the upgrade packages brought even more pizzazz to the party.
The first level upgrade package, the Special Edition, functioned as a notch above the base trim. If you’re wondering about the TL Special Edition package, Jerry

along the way! What is the Acura TL Special Edition?
Acura released the 2014 TL Special Edition in the fall of 2013 to bridge the divide between the base model TL and the upper-level TLs equipped with Acura’s various packages. With a fair purchase price of $14,566, the Special Edition TL comes with distinct Special Edition badging; 10-spoke, 18-inch alloy wheels; and a decklid spoiler to visually set it apart from the base trim.
2014 Acura TL overview
Let’s get familiar with the regular Acura TL before we get into the 2014 Special Edition’s features.
The TL, Acura’s award-winning sports sedan, was created for lively performance—and it delivers. The TL blends effortless power with style and luxury. It may not have the power of the 2014 Hyundai Genesis
or the overall opulence of the 2014 Lexus ES 350
, but the Acura TL made a home for itself as a sensible sports sedan in the luxury sector. Plus, a used Acura TL is often more affordable than most of its luxury-level rivals.
With performance as its primary goal, the 2014 model boasts spry handling and brisk acceleration thanks to its base V6 engine. Even the entry-level 3.5-liter V6 manages 0-60 mph in just 6.4 seconds.
The 2014 TL won’t win any prizes when it comes to fuel economy, earning just 23 combined mpg, but that’s the price you often pay for a more capable and dynamic engine. The TL’s storage space is also average for its class at 13.1 cubic feet of trunk space. The downside is that the back seats do not fold down to give you more space—a weak point compared to others in this class.

What’s special about the Special Edition?
To be honest, the TL Special Edition is a bit of a misnomer. The base TL is a solid vehicle in its own right, earning a JD Power quality and dependability rating of 84. While the Special Edition package incorporates a few upgrades from the Technology Package
, it’s not a huge step up from the base model. The base TL comes stacked with plenty of standard features, like a 10-way power driver seat, satellite radio, Bluetooth, a power moonroof, a USB port, and HandsFreeLink wireless phone interface. The interior of the Special Edition is nearly identical to the base, adding only a keyless access system for the inside.
While the more expensive Special Edition TL started with a $1,500 price difference on brand-new models, Kelley Blue Book reports that the base model may be more expensive in the used car market, making for quite the bargain!
2014 Acura TL Special Edition vs. Technology Package vs. Advance Package
The Special Edition may narrow the gap between the base TL and the Tech Package, but there are still quite a few features the Technology Package flaunts that the Special Edition lacks.
Here’s what the Technology Package gets you:
Premium Milano leather seating
Acura Navigation System with Voice Recognition
Acura/ELS Surround 10-speaker audio system
3,500-song hard disk drive (HDD) media storage system
The TL Special Edition brings more to the table than the base model, but drivers looking for a more convenient experience would benefit from the Technology Package.
If you’re looking for even more bonus features, the Advance Package
includes everything in the Technology Package plus heated and ventilated front seats and a blind-spot information system. Both packages offer the option of an upgraded 3.7-liter engine as well. How to find the best Acura TL Special Edition insurance
