Out of all the major car insurance companies, GEICO and Allstate have the highest-rated mobile apps. What makes those two apps stand out above the rest? A seamless paperless insurance billing and claims process and intuitive tools to help you get the most out of your insurance policy

The best car insurance apps

Let’s break down our ranking a little further and see what makes the best car insurance companies’ apps good—and what they could do better.

1. GEICO mobile app

The good: Intuitive user interface, 24/7 virtual assistant, photo estimate tool
The bad: Some users report trouble accessing customer service
Our rating: A+
Average cost of a full coverage policy: $1,297 per year
GEICO has a reputation for providing cheap, hassle-free car insurance, and its app lives up to that reputation. While some users have encountered difficulty when navigating situations that require a live agent, most agree that the mobile app’s interface is easy to use and meets their needs. It’s also got some cool features most insurance apps don’t, such as a parking locator, vehicle service reminders, and an augmented reality functionality
One major caveat: while the main GEICO app gets great reviews, the
DriveEasy Pro telematics app
, which tracks users driving habits in exchange for discounted car insurance rates, scores significantly lower for customer satisfaction.

2. Allstate mobile app

The good: Excellent customer service, 24/7 access to documents and tools
The bad: Tends to run slow
Our rating: A+
Average cost of a full coverage policy: $2,438 per year
While coverage from Allstate tends to come at a higher rate, the company’s mobile app does everything you need—and does it well. You can upload accident photos for a quick claim estimate, access your insurance ID card at any time, get roadside assistance, and file a claim whenever you need to. And Allstate’s Drivewise telematics program is folded into the main app, so you won’t need to download a separate app to get rewarded for safe driving behaviors!
A lot of users’ biggest complaint: things tend to take a long time on the Allstate app. If you’ve got the patience, though, it’s among the best car insurance apps out there.
"I was paying roughly $180 a month for insurance, but
Jerry
hooked me up with an Allstate full coverage plan for only $89! I’m so glad I trusted Jerry to find me a better plan.” —David A.

3. State Farm mobile app

The good: 24/7 access to documents, ability to deposit checks
The bad: Runs slow, auto insurance claims only
Our rating:
Average cost of a full coverage policy: $1,397
State Farm’s approach to auto insurance—and to the digital insurance experience—is practical and user-friendly. Their no-frills mobile app doesn’t have some of the cool features you’ll find with GEICO or Allstate, but you can still do everything you need to in the app, from filing claims and making payments to calling roadside assistance and connecting with insurance agents.
You’ll have to download the Drive Safe & Save app separately to participate in State Farm’s safe driver telematics program—but you’ll get a discount just for downloading the app and could save up to 30% on your insurance costs!

4. Progressive mobile app

The good: Insurance quotes for new customers, CARFAX Car Care reminders
The bad: No integration with Snapshot or other insurance products
Our rating: A-
Average cost of a full coverage policy: $1,561 per year
Progressive’s mobile app does one thing most car insurance apps don’t do: new customers can use it to get online car insurance quotes.
But with Progressive, it’s more about what the app can’t do than what it can. Customers who also have
homeowners insurance
or
renters insurance
through Progressive won’t be able to service those policies through the app. And if you want to save on car insurance premiums with Progressive’s Snapshot program, you’ll need to download a second app, clogging up precious space on your Android or iOS device.
"
Jerry
helped me change to Progressive after being with my previous insurer for 25 years. The app is amazing! It grabs your information and finds you a huge variety of choices between carriers and coverage levels.”—Leila S.

5. USAA mobile app

The good: Super secure, easy to use
The bad: Glitchy, separate app for SafePilot program
Our rating: A-
Average cost of a full coverage policy: $1,209 per year
Not everyone is eligible for an auto insurance policy from USAA, but for those who are, there’s a decent app. It’s one of the most secure insurance apps, with an extra layer of fingerprint- or voice-activated recognition. It also gives you access to USAA banking along with your insurance policy information, ID cards, roadside assistance, and more.
USAA has some of the lowest auto insurance rates in the insurance industry, but only good drivers qualify for the best rates. Unfortunately, you’ll need to download a separate app to access USAA’s SafePilot telematics program and lower your premium by up to 30%.

6. Nationwide mobile app

The good: Can change due dates in the app, manage multiple insurance policies
The bad: Hard to use at night
Our rating: B+
Average cost of a full coverage policy: $1,383 per year
Nationwide’s mobile app allows drivers to do just about everything you’d need: pay bills, file and track claims, review and change coverage options, and more. Unlike Progressive and State Farm’s apps, the Nationwide app is great for anyone who has auto and home insurance coverage through Nationwide.
But in addition to the usual complaints about glitchy performance, Nationwide policyholders report a bigger accessibility issue: the app can be hard to use at night, which is bad news for anyone who’s usually checking their insurance information outside of working hours.
"My
Jerry
rep was efficient and professional. It took about 10 minutes for them to find me my new Nationwide plan. Thank you, Jerry, for a wonderful, stress-free experience.” —Tonya R.

7. Liberty Mutual mobile app

The good: Easier claims process than website
The bad: Can’t cancel coverage
Our rating: B
Average cost of a full coverage policy: $1,879 per year
Liberty Mutual’s mobile app is the easiest way to file a claim with this insurance provider, and it comes with some other useful features. For instance, you can locate repair shops, take photos and gather contact information after an accident, or sign up for text notifications about any open claims.
But there’s one very basic function the Liberty Mutual app doesn’t include: canceling your policy. In order to do that, you’ll need to get on the phone with an agent.

8. Farmers Insurance mobile app

The good: Easy to use
The bad: Runs slow
Our rating: B-
Average cost of a full coverage policy: $1,524 per year
Farmers Insurance comes up last in our ranking of car insurance apps—which doesn’t mean it’s a bad app! In fact, Android and iPhone users both report that the user interface is intuitive and easy to navigate. You can manage payments, access ID cards, and handle claims in the app.
The downside: it’s one of the buggier insurance apps out there. Users reported a lot of trouble with verification codes, as well as error messages when trying to operate the app.

Bonus app: Jerry

The good: Helps find cheapest insurance rates, over 55 partner companies, easy to use
Our rating: A+
Average cost of a full coverage policy: Varies by provider
One thing that the apps above won’t help you with is finding cheap car insurance. They’re designed for current policyholders with claims, proof of insurance, and other basic functions in mind.
The
Jerry
app is a car insurance broker that uses AI technology in partnership with over 55 individual insurance companies to find you the best rates on the coverage you need. You can compare quotes in just 45 seconds, review your coverage options, look for available discounts, and save on coverage using Jerry’s Drive Well, Earn Perks and telematics programs. Jerry’s Garage function can also help drivers save on repairs and maintenance with handy repair estimates for your vehicle.
With a 4.7 rating on the App Store and 4.4 stars on Google Play, Jerry’s insurance app stands up with the best car insurance apps out there—and users save an average of $800+ on car insurance each year

What should a good auto insurance app have?

With more and more auto insurance companies defaulting to online tools, it’s worth knowing what to look for in a good insurance mobile app. Your insurance company’s app should allow you to:
  • Review and renew your insurance policy. Good apps allow policyholders to view insurance information at any time and renew their coverage in the app.
  • Access your insurance ID (i.e. proof of insurance). The days of keeping a physical
    insurance card
in your glove compartment aren’t over, but they’re moving toward the sunset. Every state except New Mexico permits digital proof of insurance for traffic stops and DMV visits, and your app should keep it handy.
  • File and track claims. If you need to file an insurance claim, being able to complete the process in your company’s app—without adding stressful phone calls or office visits to your to-do list—is a must.
  • Upload photos and documents. Car insurance involves a lot of paperwork, but good insurance apps let you accomplish it all on your phone.
  • Summon roadside assistance. Not every insurance policy includes
    roadside assistance
, but if yours does, it should be easy to call for a tow or lockout service via the app.
  • Accident checklists. The best apps make it easier to get the most out of your coverage. A convenient checklist that you can pull up
    after a car accident
can help you maximize your claims.
  • Find repair shops. Some apps will help you find a
    car repair
shop near you if you need to bring your car to a mechanic.

Methodology

To create Jerry’s app ranking, we combined four different ratings for each app: 1) Apple App Store rating, 2) Google Play rating, 3) Forbes rating, and 4) the Zebra’s online satisfaction rating. Letter grades were assigned based on each app’s cumulative score out of a possible 115 points. All ratings are current as of 1/18/2023.
