The original Toyota Crown, which made its debut in 1958, was the first-ever Japanese sedan sold in U.S. markets, but it has been produced in Japan since 1955.
It was introduced as part of a line of mid-size luxury cars but was eventually discontinued in 1972. While the Crown continued to be sold elsewhere throughout the world, the revamped 2023 Crown will be the first time the nameplate has been used in the U.S. in 50 years.
Toyota isn’t the only brand cashing in on a beloved old nameplate for a new era, either. Ford recently reintroduced the Mustang nameplate for the Mustang Mach-E, an all-electric crossover version of the iconic muscle car.

Rather than following in the Avalon’s footsteps, Toyota is taking the Crown in a completely different direction as its replacement.
The 2023 Toyota Crown has two options of hybrid powertrains: the XLE and Limited trims come with a 2.5-liter hybrid four-cylinder powertrain, while the Platinum trim uses the Hybrid Max, a 340-hp turbo four-cylinder and hybrid electric powertrain. All-wheel drive is standard for all.
The Toyota Crown also features the Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 system, which offers a slew of driver assistance and safety features. Pricing has yet to be released, but it is expected to go on sale in late 2022.
Appearance-wise, it resembles a Toyota Mirai mixed with a Honda Accord Crosstour—a totally different style from Toyota Crown sedans sold in other markets.
All things considered, it looks like the new Crown is poised to satisfy those looking for the functionality of a sedan while still appealing to a bolder and sportier SUV style. The interior is plush, and almost Lexus-levels of comfort.
Consumer Reports expects to see a plug-in hybrid version to be released some time down the road.
