background
Toyota
is apparently working on a successor to the venerated Toyota MR2 sports car. The sports car is set for a 2024 debut following plenty of speculation on whether or not the automaker would
revive
its most well-known coupe.
Toyota has marketed the MR2 as an exciting two-seater sports car globally for the past three decades, redesigning it over its lifetime to perfect its flaws and update its styling to maintain its appeal.
Today, it still has its followers, who praise the mid-engine sports car for its unique configuration.

From boring to bold

Before the MR2 debuted in 1984, Toyota had a reputation as a maker of reliable yet boring vehicles. But in recent years, the automaker has added the peppy
GR Supra
, GR Yaris, and GR Corolla to bolster its lineup and bring up the average appeal.
Think of a possible MR2 revival as a compliance car for average fleet sexiness rather than fuel economy.
As
ToyotaCarNews.com
reports, fans have demanded the MR2's return since its discontinuation in 2007. Since then, enthusiasts have heard contradictory reports about the automaker's intentions to revive the storied sports coupe.
The plans for the Toyota MR2 have been the subject of contradictory reports. The MR2 is said to be making a comeback despite Toyota execs shooting it down as "not a priority." But as TCN reports, rumors are again making the rounds. So what do we know about the rumored return of the Toyota MR2?

What we know

We know nothing, really, other than it's allegedly happening. According to Japanese-language news outlet Spyder7, it appears the Toyota MR2 revival is underway, supposedly drawing inspiration from the Toyota Alessandro Volta.
Per TCN, designers are emphasizing a nimble and sleek, futuristic car, with clean curving lines and a lightweight engine. It might feature a fully electric or hybrid powertrain, based on speculation, but the publication leans toward a plug-in.
The new MR2's engine could be a plug-in hybrid that combines an electric motor with a 2.9-liter or 3.0-liter V6 with a combined output of 345-395 horsepower.
As far as pricing, TCN predicts the new MR2 will cost around six million yen (or $52,700) in Japan. The U.S. might see a starting price above $40,000 assuming the MR2 is placed above the Supra in Toyota's pricing model.

Wait and see

This is all speculation, of course. It's to be seen in 2023 if the automaker decides to make any announcements about an MR2 revival. Until then, don't get your hopes up too high.
