Mercedes-Benz
may not be a name you’d expect to see attached to a lawsuit, but here we are. Mercedes is being hauled to court over a matter of cheating on a test. Several, actually—diesel emissions tests that the company allegedly found a way to fudge the numbers on. But it seems their plan may not have actually gone too well. You may be looking for a way to adjust the numbers on your monthly car insurance
premium, too. That’s why we suggest using the Jerry app to lower what you’re paying per month for your car insurance—see what you could save, and what you’ve been missing, today. How did Mercedes get in trouble for cheating?
According to details provided by Automotive News
, Mercedes is in hot water in Germany. It seems that the company installed some devices that fooled testing machines into thinking that the Mercedes models in question, the GLK and GLC crossovers, released less emissions than they actually do. VZBZ, Germany’s largest consumer protection group, is accusing Mercedes of deceiving customers into purchasing vehicles they believed were more eco-friendly than they actually are.
Who will win the lawsuit?
If VZBZ wins this class-action-style lawsuit, it will set a precedent that will actually empower Mercedes owners and would assist them in gaining compensation for the software that VZBZ claims was used to trick emissions tests.
So far, the only model years eligible are the 2018 GLK and GLC crossovers, but that could affect 50,000 GLC and GLK models in Germany. Unfortunately for drivers, other companies have been brought to trial over similar claims nearly 25,000 times, and 95% of these trials have been tossed out.
Emissions scandals are anything but new
The temptation of cheating on emissions tests is something far from novel. In fact, it’s been the bane of Volkswagen’s existence for several years, costing the company billions in vehicle adjustments, fines, and hefty legal bills.
Forbes also reports that Nissan, GM, Daimler, Suzuki, and Mitsubishi have all been caught cheating on these types of tests. Thankfully, instead of lying to consumers about the carbon emissions that their vehicles put out, these automakers will invest in EVs, where hopefully more ethical business practices will follow.
