Mazda released the first-generation MX-6 model in 1987 as what was essentially a two-door Mazda 626. It was a reliable little sports car, and it ran on a turbocharged 2.2-liter four-cylinder engine. Buyers could choose either a manual or automatic transmission.
Interested drivers could upgrade to the MX-6 GT trim along with a package that included four-wheel steering. This package demonstrated the handling potential of the MX-6. It might have not been one of the
fastest cars of the '90s
, but it had its place for drivers who wanted something sporty without the high cost of sports cars.The first generation of the MX-6 ended in 1992, but an even more impressive model was still to come.
The second-generation Mazda MX-6 made a statement
Second-generation Mazda MX-6 vehicles hit the streets in 1993. The new MX-6 was much sleeker than its previous generation, and in many ways, it was sleeker than most other cars on the road. With its rounder, surprisingly aggressive design, the second-generation MX-6 looked like a car from a decade later.
This model of MX-6 ran off a more powerful 2.5-liter V6 that made 160 horsepower. It could get from 0 to 60 miles per hour in a respectable 7.7 seconds. For those looking for more power, a 200-horsepower variant was available.
The almost futuristic design of the Mazda MX-6 wasn't the only aspect of the second-generation model that was ahead of its time. It also had a lightweight chassis at a time when that was uncommon. It made the car something special, as coupes typically didn't feel like the MX-6 in the 1990s.
How rare is the Mazda MX-6 today?
Even though the second-generation MX-6 was a unique and ahead-of-its-time car, it was not successful in terms of sales. Because of that, production ended in 1997, and there has not been another MX-6 model since.
With this limited production, it can be hard to find an MX-6 today. This is worsened since so many of them have unfortunately been scrapped or modified to barely resemble the original car. However, if you do manage to find an MX-6, it will be surprisingly affordable.
HotCars notes that the estimated price for an MX-6 is approximately $8,000. This continues the trend that the Mazda MX-6 has been known for since it launched, being affordable given its capabilities and style.
