It’s hard to beat the career of Jeff Gordon, of the best American race car drivers of all time. Born in Vallejo, California in 1971, Gordon went on to make motorsport
history over and over again throughout the peak of his career. Read on with the car ownership experts
at Jerry to learn more about how Gordon got into racing, his career highlights, and how he changed the face of racing forever. How Jeff Gordon got his start
According to JeffGordon.com
, Jeff first showed an interest in racing at just five years old. Outside his Vallejo, California home, Gordon and his stepfather started running laps together at a nearby makeshift racetrack that had been converted from an old fairground. By age six, he was setting track records in a quarter midget. As Gordon aged, he graduated to an interest in sprint cars, but at 13 he was still too young to compete. Recognizing his talent, Gordon’s family appealed to get him race.
Eventually, his family relocated to Pittsboro, Indiana, where Gordon could be closer to the heart of sprint car racing. As a teenager, he began to rack up championships at Speedways across Indiana.
When Gordon finally drove his first stock car, he knew it was where he wanted to start his career.
His beginnings in motorsport racing
In 1990, luck would have it that Jeff Gordon would meet someone who would influence the rest of his career—Ray Evernham. Evernham was also unknown at the time, but together, the two would eventually form an unstoppable racing team.
Jeff won Rookie of the Year for the 1991 season, and by 1992 Gordon had been noticed by CEO of Hendrick Motorsports, Rick Hendrick. Evernham was Gordon’s crew chief from 1993 through 1999, and together the two earned three of Gordon’s four NASCAR Cup championships.
In addition to the four NASCAR cup championship wins ( 1995, 1997, 1998, 2001), Gordon won 93 Career NASCAR Cup Victories, 81 Career Poles, and earned his spot at third on the all-time NASCAR Cup wins list.
He is also a three-time Daytona 500 winner, five-time Brickyard 400 winner, three-time All-Star race winner, nine-time NASCAR Cup Road Course winner, and a twelve-time NASCAR Cap Restrictor Plate winner.
