background
The race to the skies is upon us—many companies are working hard to create their version of flying cars. Though they might not look like the flying cars, you have in mind. EVTOL, electrical vertical take-off, and landing vehicles are on the way, and one of
Hyundai’s
subsidiaries just unveiled designs for theirs.
Jerry
has all the details of the known interior specs and the expected timeline for this flying vehicle.

Supernal, and the interior specs of their flying car

Supernal is one of
Hyundai
’s subsidiaries, based in the United States. They are working on AAM, or advanced air mobility, specifically their eVTOL, recently showcased at the 2022 Farnborough International Airshow in England. The focus was on the cabin experience and a breakdown of expected passenger comfort and specs of the biomimicry-inspired vehicle.
Supernal’s eVTOL is inspired by a butterfly with DeLorean-style doors on either side that lift up rather than to the side like most cars. There are handholds on these doors and on the backs of the seats to help passengers enter the vehicle. The car's current design is similar to that of a small airport shuttle and can hold up to five passengers
The vehicle includes wireless cellphone charging and space in the back of the seats to store your phone for watching or keeping track of your location. The windows are protected and block both UV and infrared.
The lighting is “calming” and inspired by a car’s sunroof and set to change during the journey to create a “light therapy effect”. The seats are lightweight with ergonomic contours, made of forged carbon, and a mix of vegetable leather and recycled plastic fabrics.
The cars can also be customized, and each customized color palette is designed after a specific location on Earth. So far, these include:
  • Rub’al-Khali Desert in Doha, Qatar
  • Grand Canyon in Arizona, USA
  • Mount Halla in Jeju, South Korea
  • Cologne Cathedral in Cologne, Germany
  • City Center in Singapore

When to expect Supernal’s flying car and future projects

Supernal’s hydrogen-powered eVTOL vehicle is expected to be certified by 2028 in the United States. They’re hoping this vehicle is just the beginning, with plans to expand their AAM products to the U.K. shortly after. And in South Korea, the goal is to create regional city-to-city vehicles with the Division (the South Korean-based sister company to Supernal) by 2030.
