background
Stacks of coins, a bag of cash, and a model house sitting on a table.
Lamborghini
has an air about it that few automakers share. There’s something about a Countach that says, “I have more money than you” like a
Ferrari
, but with a fun flare its Italian rival lacks. It’s less pompous while being equally extravagant.
The two companies have been in an arm wrestle over Italian
luxury car
domination since Enzo Ferrari called Ferruccio Lamborghini a dumb farmer in the ‘50s. Both founders and their companies struggled financially for years but came out on top in the end.
While Lamborghini’s financial problems were particularly treacherous, Ferruccio’s smart business sense allowed him to weather the company’s troubles relatively unscathed. By the time of his death in 1993, he’d amassed an impressive fortune.

Ferruccio Lamborghini’s successes and failures

Ferruccio Lamborghini was an intelligent businessman. Throughout his life, his companies filled needs that he saw as underserved in his country.
When
Italy
was at war, he built and repaired vehicles for the army. When it needed farming equipment after WWII, he started a tractor company. Each business buit upon the success of the last—that is, until he started the supercar brand that made him famous.
When it came to the style and performance of its cars, Lamborghini killed the competition. When it came to making money, not so much. Though he founded in 1963, the company’s namesake had nothing to do with the automaker in just over a decade’s time.
But that wasn’t the end of Ferruccio Lamborghini’s entrepreneurial spirit. After selling his shares in Automobili Lamborghini, he started several other ventures related to mechanical engineering.
Guesses online as to his final net worth vary widely, but a look at his assets makes it easy to assume that the man died a multi-millionaire.

How Lamborghini has fared since Ferruccio’s departure

Automobili Lamborghini wasn’t out of the woods once Ferruccio sold his shares. The company switched hands many times in the decades that proceeded the deal.
Ferruccio sold his shares to two wealthy Swiss friends, but they couldn’t turn a profit and the automaker was forced into liquidation. The Italian government sold the company in 1981 to two French billionaires, but they too failed to make it a success.
Finally, in 1998, the company was acquired by German automaker
Audi
. The company’s experience producing luxury cars proved useful and made Lamborghini the success it is today. Today, according to
Statista
, Lamborghini is worth over $280 million.
