Could Buick Be Getting a Redesign?

Buick has gone years without getting a true refresh, but that might be about to change. With brands reviving themselves in time to greet the EV wave, GM might be considering giving Buick some EVs and a redesign of its own.

background
There is no doubt that
Buick
is overdue for a reboot of its brand. Buick has found itself taking a back seat in recent years as
General Motors
continues to introduce new lines and reinvented favorites, and the brand's popularity has suffered as a result.
Now there are signs a rebrand may be on the horizon. A recently discovered image from an Instagram account shows what looks to be a tweaked Buick logo. The image of the new tri-shield badge seems to confirm suspicions brought about by earlier trademark filings.

Buick's revamped badge design

Several car companies are choosing to overhaul their brands with freshly registered trademarks. It is no surprise that GM was one of the first to jump on the badge-tweaking bandwagon. Buick seems to be in on the refurbishing, even though it was omitted from GM's Super Bowl commercial ad this year.
The modernized badge logo design couldn't come at a better time for Buick. As the new era of EV driving arrives, it only makes sense for Buick to come along for the ride. GM's recently reimagined Cadillac badge hints at a simpler, more stylized approach, and it’s expected Buick will follow suit.
The Instagram Buick logo reveal might only be a tease, as no one knows for sure if it will be the final design.
MotorTrend
notes that the leaked image also gives a glimpse of what looks like the interior of a
Cadillac Lyriq
. It could be a preview of Buick's upcoming Lyriq-inspired EV.

What does the new tri-shield logo look like?

General Motors plans to transition all its Cadillacs into fully-electric vehicles by 2030. Along with this ambitious goal, the company is making several stylistic changes to the traditional logo—muted colors and simpler shapes replacing its classic shield. The new Buick appears to be heading in that direction as well.
Buick's new trademark seems to consist of "three stylized shields" with improved 3D graphic readability. The new logo is described as having three floating shields with the original surrounding circle removed from its previous design. Some of GM's newer cars feature badges that light up and can be seen at a distance. It remains to be seen if this is the case with the Buick redesign.
The leaked image also shows the three shields horizontally-aligned rather than the diagonal positioning we are used to seeing, according to
Car and Driver
. The stripe inside the shield appears to have been replaced by a swooping, downward-facing line.

GM includes Buick in its ambitious future EV plans

Car enthusiasts are closely watching to see if the redesigned Buick logo is a sign of more exciting things to come. Whether the new badge will appear on Buick's 2023 model vehicles or not is anyone's guess. The upcoming compact crossover EVs are another possibility, though little information is available to date.
Buick's anticipated electric vehicles will rely on GM's all-new Ultium battery platform. Two of them are expected to be small crossovers with the debut date slated for 2025. Though Buick has yet to confirm it, the timing is right for the 2024 reborn, all-electric Electra to show off the new trademark. The concept car was revealed at Beijing's 2020 auto show, generating a lot of enthusiasm.
It seems Buick is ready to take its place among the industry's forward-thinking reinventions. If the leaked image is any indication of things to come, then maybe Buick is finally getting the attention it deserves.
