Why is Bosch investing in hydrogen tech?

reports, Bosch is looking to have hydrogen-powered technology ready for personal vehicle use by the year 2030. They’ve announced plans to invest $526 million into developing this new form of energy use, revolving around hydrogen fuel cells and a fascinating device known as an electrolyzer. Doesn’t sound familiar? You aren’t alone. 

How would a hydrogen-powered car work? 

Hydrogen-powered vehicles, at least for the foreseeable future, would likely use what’s called an electrolyzer.

, an electrolyzer is a device that breaks down hydrogen molecules from oxygen molecules in water using an electrical charge. The separated hydrogen molecules then power the vehicle using combustion, in a similar way to how modern gas-powered vehicles work. 
Some people have already started experimenting with hydrogen-powered drag cars, but hydrogen-combustion vehicles aren’t available for the public—unless they’re willing to build their own. We might see hydrogen-powered drag cars before anything else—at least until 2030 rolls around.

Will Bosch’s hydrogen-powered tech compete with EVs?

That’s yet to be seen. It is important to remember that most of the automotive world is set on lithium-ion batteries as the way to power the cars of the future. The only issue is that these batteries can be harmful to the planet by creating more
greenhouse gas emissions
during production and using a large number of natural resources. They are also wildly expensive to produce—sometimes $6,000-$10,000 apiece. 
As to whether Bosch’s developments will compete with EVs, it’s possible. Companies like Tesla, Fisker, and Lucid may switch gears, depending on how their lithium supply lasts. But most automotive manufacturers are being strategic about keeping their hands on a steady supply—even the U.S. government is making moves. The future of Bosch’s hydrogen dreams might depend on whether hydrogen energy ends up being more costly than our current EV schemes.
