Chevrolet
built a couple winners when it released the Camaro and the Corvette. The tough Camaro has inspired everyone from street racers to Michael Bay
, and the stylish Corvette edges closer to Ferrari territory with every passing year. But how would they stack up in a contest of Camaro vs. Corvette? Jerry
, the car ownership super app
, compares the two Chevy classics. Camaro vs. Corvette: A not-so-obvious contest
It’s a bit tough to bury the lede here for any car fans who have been paying attention: U.S. News
has already declared the Corvette the best luxury sports car of 2022. This American classic managed to secure the number one spot in a field of 13 other sports cars, thanks to an outstanding combination of looks, power, and performance. The 2022 Vette is a chart-topper. But of course, trophies in the luxury sports category don’t mean much to someone who doesn’t want a luxury sports car. For those in the market for a powerful, fast bruiser, the 2022 Camaro more than delivers. And it’s cheaper than the Corvette. So how do you decide between the Camaro vs. Corvette?
Vetting the Vette, courting the Camaro
Let’s start with the cold, hard numbers, broken down for us by MotorBiscuit
. The 2022 Chevrolet C8 Corvette Stingray runs on a 6.2-liter “LT2” V8, producing 490 hp and 465 lb-ft of torque. It weighs in at 3,535 pounds and will rocket from 0-60 in a blistering 2.8 seconds. The 2022 Chevrolet Camaro 1LS, 1LT, 2LT, and 3LT run on two possible engine options: a 2-liter turbocharged four-cylinder or a 3.6-liter V6. The turbo generates 275 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque, and does 0-60 in 5.1 seconds. The V6 adds a few more horses for 3,335 hp, but loses a bit of torque at 284 lb-ft. The V6 manual adds a potentially undetectable .1 second to its 0-60 clock, accelerating in 5.2 seconds. Most versions weigh around 3,730 pounds.
We are forced to conclude: the Corvette is indeed lighter and quicker. We have a clear winner in the speed and acceleration category.
Camaro vs. Corvette: Who ultimately wins
But let’s say you want speed, power, and room for more than you and your speed junkie boyfriend. The two-seater Corvette simply won’t cut it.The Camaro, however, will happily open up its back doors to friends.
And it won’t ask for as egregious an entry fee for a ride: the Corvette ranges from $60,900 to $79,850, says Consumer Reports
, while the Camaro ranges from $25,000 to $69,000. So you can empty your piggy bank if you have to have that Vette, but make sure you save money for a babysitter. Though we have a clear winner in the current speed contest, MotorBiscuit drops a tantalizing detail about the 2023 Camaro: it might be stealing the Corvette’s very fast LT2 V8 engine. If that day comes, we promise to redo the whole contest, and we may see some justice for Camaro fans.
