The BMW
i8 hasn’t had it easy. The flawed concept from German luxury brand BMW was lambasted on the internet
for its controversial appearance and disappointing performance, but the Vision M Next concept promised to turn things around. It looks like BMW is finally delivering what the Vision 8 M Concept promised for the 2024 BMW i8.
While an official moniker has yet to be released, Car and Driver
feels that the new version is enough of a departure from the previous model that it deserves a distinction of its own as the i8 M. To learn more about what’s in the store for the new i8, read on with the car ownership experts at Jerry
. What’s new for the BMW i8 M
While the BMW i8 is marketed as a plug-in hybrid, its measly 18 miles of electric range leave much to be desired. According to Car and Driver
, the current i8 combines a turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder gas engine with an 11.6-kWh battery pack and two electric motors. It gets a combined total of 369 horsepower. These numbers aren’t bad, but they’re somewhat lackluster both for a hybrid and for a hypercar.
The i8 M, on the other hand, will reportedly do much better in both respects. After all, with an estimated starting price of $160,000, it’s not a car you can afford to feel lackluster about.
Car and Driver also predicts that the new BMW i8 will be offered in a similar configuration to the current model’s lineup with both a fixed-roof coupe body style as well as a ragtop roadster available.
A similar setup with a more powerful configuration
The plug-in hybrid powertrain is expected to have a similar setup to the current model, with an electric motor on the front axle and a mid-mounted gasoline engine and electric motor on the rear axle.
As far as upgrades go, BMW has stated that the new car will offer a turbocharged four-cylinder in lieu of the current i8’s 1.5-liter three-cylinder gas engine. The new system will also have a total combined gas and electric output of 591 horsepower. This will help the i8 compete on the same level as the Acura NSX, Lexus LC500h
, and Polestar 1. The electric driving range for the new concept is also speculated to be 62 miles, a big improvement from the current model. This means that the 2024 i8 will likely have a much larger battery pack, and thus a slightly different configuration.
