Many of us tend to associate Cadillacs
with being full-size luxury sedans. While that was certainly the case in a bygone era, Cadillacs today are more associated with crossover and full-size SUVs, and future Cadillacs will probably be associated as EV leaders. But the sedan era of Cadillacs didn't end without a fight. The Detroit-based company tried to keep their grand sedans alive with the Cadillac CT6, despite their pricey insurance costs

Between the ‘70s and ‘90s, a middle-class suburbanite might show off their status by driving a Cadillac Fleetwood. This was a large sedan that could easily fit the whole family. However, Cadillac discontinued the Fleetwood in 1996.
Trying to capitalize on nostalgia, Cadillac decided it was time to bring back a big sedan in the 2010s. With this in mind, the Cadillac CT6 was born and debuted in 2016 as a stylish reimagining of the old Fleetwood. The CT6 would have all the luxuries you would expect from a Caddy, including a 550-hp engine.
The car was exceptionally high-tech by the standards of six years ago. It came with a 8-inch infotainment system, full compatibility with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless phone charging, and a trio of charge ports.
Why was the Cadillac CT6 discontinued?
One of the biggest shortcomings of the Cadillac CT6 is that it failed to dazzle car critics. Depending on the trim, the car would cost between $60,000 and $99,000. For that price point, the Cadillac would have to be an amazing vehicle.
Sadly, it wasn't. The Cadillac failed to outclass its European rivals in the Mercedes S-class, BMW 7-series, and Audi A8.
Additionally, Cadillac was undergoing a change in strategy. They found that crossover and full size SUVs were far more profitable. According to Car and Driver
, the Cadillac XT5 outsold the Cadillac CT6 by 50,000 units to 7,915 units in a single year. The final nail in the coffin for the CT6 was the company's ambition to go electric. The factory where the CT6 was manufactured has been restructured to build Cadillac's future electric fleet.
How to buy a CT6 today
If you want to buy a Cadillac CT6 today, it may be like trying to find a needle in a haystack. Interestingly enough, the car was successful in China and is still being manufactured there today. If you can overcome all the challenges of trying to get a car shipped across the Pacific, buying in China is an option.
As for buying a new CT6 in America, that will be next to impossible. It was officially discontinued nearly two years ago, and can't be searched for on Cadillac's dealership inventory website. You may be able to find a used one with low mileage. But a new, American-made Cadillac CT6 is a unicorn.
