There are a lot of ties for first on U.S. News’ list of SUVs.
Some, like the tie between the Hyundai Palisade and Kia Telluride
, aren’t surprising. These two midsize models built by the same parent company are nearly identical. The subcompact models from the two brands, the Hyundai Kona and Kia Soul, also tied for first in their category. But a few other podium sharers were less obvious. The Mazda CX-30, for example, shared the subcompact prize with the Kona and Soul.
For compact SUVs
, Kia’s Sportage got knocked down the list in favor of the Honda CR-V while the Hyundai Tucson managed to stay on top. In fact, the Hyundai Tucson turned out to be the biggest winner on the list. Its hybrid version won in the hybrid, 2-row, and crossover categories. The only other standard SUV that managed to keep first place for itself was the Jeep Wagoneer which took home the prize for best large SUV.
The best luxury SUVs
Tying wasn’t reserved for standard categories. Of the eight luxury SUV types, four split first place between rival models.
BMW and Volvo were often found on the top of the list together. Their 2-row crossovers (the BMW iX and Volvo XC40 Recharge), compact SUVs (X3 and CX60), and subcompact models (the X1 and regular XC40) all shared the podium in both categories.
The Mercedes GLC-Class was also marked for first place in the compact SUV category, but U.S. News managed to find true winners for other luxury segments.
The Porsche Cayenne Hybrid won over the Lexus NX in the luxury hybrid category, the Lincoln Navigator edged out the Jeep Grand Wagoneer for the luxury 3-row and large segments, and the Mercedes GLE-Class won first place for luxury midsize SUVs.
