Mustang offers an iconic design and lots of performance for the $27,470 price. So why was Consumer Reports less than impressed?

2022 Ford Mustang: Ride and performance

When it comes to the new Ford Mustang, buyers can opt for a coupe or convertible. According to
Consumer Reports
, “Unlike many sporty cars and coupes, the Mustang can serve as a daily driver without severely compromising visibility, ease of access, or drivability.”
The 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder coupe with an automatic transmission can ramp up to 60 mph in 6.4 seconds. However, testers at Consumer Reports were not impressed with the gritty, raspy engine sound. The snoozefest power delivery didn’t excite them either.
The 5.0-liter GT V8 with a six-speed manual transmission can jump to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds. With 460 hp, the GT is a smooth ride with a light clutch that prevents left-leg fatigue in traffic. Drivers can expect an abundant quantity of readily available thrust at the drop of a hat and an EPA of around 19 mpg.

2022 Ford Mustang: Comfort and safety features

The Mustang’s interior is attractive and well-finished. The dash features a brushed metallic trim, and testers noted the substantial chrome toggle switches that add an air of sophistication.
However, testers at Consumer Reports said the interior fell short of typical midsize family sedans. They were not a fan of faux stitching stamped into the panels and the use of cheap plastics.
Testers found the front seats super supportive but wished they offered a power recline feature. The back rear seats are tight and can fit a couple of groceries at most.
Consumer Reports appreciated the optional easy-to-use Sync 3 touch screen infotainment system, but didn’t like the 2.4-inch screen on the base audio system. There’s no subscription fee to use the Bluetooth-paired 911 Assist, but your phone must be paired and operational to access it.
The 2022 Ford Mustang coupe earned an Acceptable rating from the IIHS driver-side small overlap front-crash test and received a Good rating in the remainder of the crash tests.
Driver assist features like daytime running lights, electronic stability control, traction control, anti-lock brakes, and rear belt minder all come standard. Drivers also found the standard backup camera very helpful.

Ford Mustang takes last place

Of all the 2022 sports cars Consumer Reports tested, the 2022 Ford Mustang received the lowest score.
The 2022 Mazda MX-5 Miata was 2022’s highest-rate sports car, with an overall score of 85 from Consumer Reports. The zippy roadster gets an overall EPA of 34 mpg and can jump to 60 mph in 6.7 seconds. The cheapest model starts at $27,650.
With an overall score of 83, the 2022 Porsche 718 Boxster earned an impressive road test score of 95. Starting at $62,600, the Porsche offers an overall EPA of 26 mpg. The auto can hit 60 mph in just 4.4 seconds.
The
2022 BMW Z4
came in with a top speed of 155 mph and an overall rating of 74. Receiving an 86 on its road test score, the Z4 gets an EPA of 29 mpg and can reach 60 mph in 6.1 seconds. Other high rankers include
the 2022 Toyota Supra
, the 2022 BMW 2 Series, and the 2022 Audi TT.
With a low overall score of 47, the 2022 Ford Mustang scored a 1 out of 5 rating for its predicted reliability, rear access, and rear seat comfort.
The Pony car received a 2 out of 5 rating for its trunk/cargo area and fuel economy and scored a measly 3 out of 10 for greenhouse gas emission. The auto also scored a 3 out of 5 rating for its ride, noise, and front access.
However, Consumer Reports was satisfied with the Mustang’s acceleration, transmission, routine handling, braking, and climate system.
