background
Your driving environment can make a big impact on the best car for you to purchase. If you live in a more rural area, you might opt for a car that has great
off-roading
capabilities, while city drivers might put more emphasis on fuel economy, car size, and more.
For those who fall into that later category of city dwellers,
Consumer Reports
has compiled a list of the best used cars for city driving—and
Mazda
makes the list with the CX-5 as the best SUV for cities.

How does Consumer Reports determine the best city cars?

Owning a car in a city can be a hassle—from finding parking to paying tickets and more.
That means for most drivers who live in a city, purchasing a car needs to be worth the trouble, which is why Consumer Reports created a list of best used cars and SUVs for city driving. With this list, drivers gain insight into what car might work for their unique living situation.
To determine the best used city cars and SUVs, Consumer Reports focused on a few key factors. First, reviewers wanted to select cars with a tight turning radius—meaning it could make a U-Turn in less than 38 feet.
Next, they wanted a car that ranged between 176 and 180 inches for easy city parking. Good gas mileage was also a must, in case drivers get stuck in traffic. Lastly, a good ride and good reliability were must-haves to make the list.

Why is the 2017 Mazda CX-5 perfect for cities?

The Mazda CX-5 was chosen as one of the best used SUVs for cities based on its size, cargo space, engine, and more.
The 2017
Mazda CX-5 fits
into the Consumer Reports required size at 179 inches, making it a compact SUV. It also meets the qualification of a 38 foot turning radius, plus has great handling, a roomy interior, and ample cargo space.
Although the Mazda CX-5 didn’t have a great engine when it first debuted, in 2014 the engine got an upgrade that’s still available in the 2017 model. The 2017 Mazda CX-5 is equipped with a 2.5-liter engine that greatly improves the vehicle’s acceleration.
Unfortunately, the one downfall to the 2017 Mazda CX-5 is the fuel economy its engine provides. At an overall rate of 19 mpg, this compact SUV does fall a bit behind the average fuel economy of a car on the list, which is an overall 25 mpg.
Lastly, the 2017 Mazda CX-5 has impressive safety features for a car that is five years old, including a backup camera and autonomous emergency braking. The car has good crash ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and some Mazda dealers might be able to install Apple CarPlay or Android Auto into the 2017 model.
