, the much-hyped race car was supposed to be out at some point this year, but it seems like that might not be happening. Many enthusiasts were longing to see the GR Super Sport racing against other cars on the speedway, but for now, they’ll have to wait and see how things unfold.
Why might the Toyota GR Super Sport be canceled?
Motor1 reported that a pre-production prototype of the street-legal GR Super Sport model was involved in an accident during a recent test at Fuji Speedway. The hybrid hypercar allegedly sustained
after catching fire. This has led to rumors that Toyota will abort the race car's development.
The 2018 unveiling of the GR Super Sport concept by Toyota was nothing short of a surprise for most consumers, as reported by Motor1. Toyota teased a hypercar for the road that complemented its WEC racer. In a video released by Toyota back in June 2019, the GR Super Sport was shot at the Fuji Speedway in Japan with Toyota CEO Akio Toyoda behind the wheel.
The car debuted in September 2020 when it did a demonstration lap of the Circuit de la Sarthe during the 88th 24 Hours of Le Mans.
The possible demise of the road car does not harm the LMDh program in any way. Toyota isn’t obligated to sell a street-legal version of the hypercar.
The GR Super Sport is expected to have a twin-turbo 2.4-liter V6 engine that’s part of a hybrid powertrain. The combined output with its electric motors is expected to surpass the 1,000-horsepower mark.
The GR Super Sport will probably be a coupe and may have a canopy section. The hypercar features 18-inch wheels and massive side air vents.
It’s not clear for sure whether the car will be canceled since it’s not unheard of for prototypes to crash.
Is it common for concept cars to crash during road tests?
A lot of concept cars crash, and sometimes, they even go up in flames during testing. That was the case with an Acura NSX prototype at the Nürburgring in July 2014 and the Audi A7 Sportback in the Alps in June 2017. The GR Super Sport isn’t the first prototype to fail a road test.
According to Motor1, at the moment, we can only wait to see whether the road-legal version of the hypercar is canceled or not. If the GR Super Sport becomes available after all, you can expect it to come with a hefty price tag.
