CEO Elon Musk recently Tweeted about the cancellation of the Model S Plaid+. The model was considered unnecessary as the current Model S Plaid has exceptional acceleration and range capabilities.
has no official public relations department, the public learns of buying events and updates through Elon Musk's Twitter account. No real information on the cancellation was given.
, The Plaid+ offered a longer range of exceptional 520-mile range and 1,100 horsepower all-electric engine.
Its price of $149,990 was at least $10,000 more than Tesla had anticipated charging for the upgrade to the Model S Plaid. Interiors did not change much between the two models. Elon Musk thought the upgrade was not enough of a change to continue offering the upgrade.
While the Model S Plaid offers an astounding 520-mile range, it was too much for the average buyer. Average road trips have the vehicle's passengers stopping for gas, snacks, and restroom breaks often. The vehicle’s capacity to last over seven hours at 70 mph is a bit overkill for the average buyer, which is a factor that could have played a part in the cancellation.
Canceled without explanation
While there are many theories that can explain the sudden cancellation of the Model S Plaid+ just days before the delivery of the Model S Plaid, there is no real explanation from Elon Musk or Tesla.
One theory states that it could be because they plan on offering the upgrade as part of the Roadster package. Another is that the Plaid+ doesn’t offer enough extra for the cost of an upgrade.
Another possible explanation is that the extra batteries needed to run the Plaid+ would be better spent making more Model S Plaids. Regardless of the rumors, there are no clear statements to explain the cancellation .
The surviving Model S Plaid is a reworked and upgraded version of the Model S. It has an increased horsepower of 1,020, an upgraded interior, and streamlined body. Speed enthusiasts will love its two-second 0-to-60-mph time and the under ten-second quarter-mile. The Model S Plaid already seems to have perfected the Model S line.
While the Model S Plaid+ cancellation is still a mystery, the Model S Plaid debuted on June 10th and is currently available for orders. Tesla is also preparing the new Roadster and has not yet announced the plans to reveal the new specs to the public, so Tesla enthusiasts will have plenty to look forward to.
