Subaru Recalls Ascent, Legacy, and Outback Models Over Potential Transmission Failure

What’s causing the latest Subaru recall?
According to
Consumer Reports
, the Subaru recall is being caused by a software issue. A piece of tech known as the transmission control unit might start to glitch out, allowing a driver whose vehicle is shifting from park to drive to possibly snap their drive chain. The recall issue has been noted to impact:
- Driver’s ability to shift into park or drive
- Ability to start the engine
- The transmission fluid—contaminants have been found in some vehicles
- The vehicle’s drive chain
While there’s certainly the risk of a crash occurring due to any of these issues, the Subaru recall hasn’t caused any injuries or crashes that have been reported yet.
However, safety recalls should be taken seriously, and are typically repaired at a manufacturer’s dealership at little-to-no cost to the owner.
What year/models are affected by the Subaru recall?
The total number of vehicles being affected by the Subaru recall is 198,255. Of this number, three models comprise the list:
- 160,941 Ascents (2019-2020 models)
- 2,057 Outbacks: (All 2020 models)
- 35,257 Legacies: (All 2020 models)
Thankfully, according to Consumer Reports, fixing the issue should be somewhat straightforward. Drivers will get a letter notification or email regarding their vehicle being affected by the Subaru recall.
When drivers take their Subaru in to get repaired, the dealership technicians will reprogram the transmission control unit and analyze data from the unit to check for drive chain slippage. The last thing do is check the transmission for damage and/or contaminants
How to check if your Subaru has been recalled
The
National Highway Safety and Transportation Association’s website
allows drivers to enter their vehicle identification number (VIN) to check for safety recalls. Subaru drivers can enter their VIN to see if their Ascent, Outback
, or Legacy has been affected and will need mandatory service. Subaru is set to send out notifications of the safety by February 7, 2022. For drivers who can’t find a recall associated with their vehicle, or who aren’t notified, there’s nothing to worry about.
