Grand Cherokee. For years, rumors have circulated about a massive engine upgrade expected for the classic SUV. Now reports have surfaced that the engine, codenamed Tornado, will debut in next year’s model.

The Cherokee’s plug-in hybrid option would be the same 4xe powertrain as the Wrangler—a turbocharged, 2.0-liter, four-cylinder with two electric motors. Altogether the engines would give the Grand Cherokee 375 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of torque.
Engine specs aren’t the only thing getting an upgrade. A facia tweak, slightly shorter body, and safety tech like full-speed collision warning, rear cross-path detection, adaptive cruise control, and lane-keep assist are all expected to be in the mix.

The Cherokee L comes in six trims, from the $38,700 Laredo to the $61,700 Summit Reserve. Upgrades can include a power-operated rear liftgate, automatic high-beam headlamps, remote start, interior ambient lighting, driver memory settings, leather upholstery, and heated second-row seats.
No matter the trim, the Cherokee L comes in rear- or all-wheel drive with either a 290-hp V-6 or a 357-hp V-8. All in all, it’s a family-friendly balance between luxury and off-road capability.
