background
Consumer Reports
released its vehicle ratings for 2022 earlier this year, and in its subcompact SUV segment, 3 vehicles flunked the road test. These included the 2022
Chevy
Trax, the 2022 Jeep Renegade, and the 2022 Fiat 500X. While these cars certainly look stylish on the road, how well they actually perform on the black top is certainly a different story.
For Chevy and Jeep, these ratings might come as a heavy blow and surprising blow. Thankfully, we’ve rounded up the lows and highs of each of these 3 subcompact SUVs that managed to fail Consumer Reports’ 2022 road test.

2022 Chevy Trax

The Chevy Trax left a lot to be desired after its road test.
According to
Consumer Reports
, the Chevy Trax scored a 55 on its road test. Still, this subcompact SUV did the best overall between all 3 flunkies—but not by much. Of the set, the Chevy has the slowest acceleration time, but has a much more reliable and smooth-shifting 6-speed automatic transmission. Between these subcompact SUVs, the Chevy Trax’s pros and cons list includes:
Pros
  • A 60-0mph braking time of 130-ft
  • Higher quality
    headlights
    with improved nighttime visibility
  • Improved fuel economy over the other two subcompact SUVs on this list, with an impressive highway mileage rating of 34 mpg
Cons
  • Less safety features then the other two subcompact SUVs, especially newer technology such as collision detection, pedestrian detection, or blindspot alerts.
  • Has a customer satisfaction rating of 1 out of 5
  • A low-quality, outdated climate control system

2022 Jeep Renegade

Compared with Chevy and Fiat’s subcompact SUVs, the 2022 Jeep Renegade was the vehicle with the best road test score at 56, but came in second place in overall rating to the Chevy Trax. Jeep’s subcompact SUV has a pros and cons list highlighted by:
Pros
  • A quiet insulated, modern cabin space with intuitive driver control features and exceptional climate control system
  • Better safety features than the Chevy Trax or Fiat 500X, including standard lane departure warning, and lane “keeping” assistance sensors.
  • Able to brake in wet conditions from 60 mph-0 nearly 10ft quicker than the Chevy Trax or Fiat 500X
Cons
  • A reliability rating of 2 out of 5—tying with Fiat, but falling far from the Chevy Trax’s 5 out of 5 score.
  • Worse crash test safety ratings than the Chevy Trax (data unavailable for Fiat)
  • A bumpy and rough riding experience, thanks to an unforgiving suspension system

2022 Fiat 500X

Overall, Fiat’s 500X was the subcompact SUV who scored the worst in both its overall rating of 37 and its road test score of 50.
The Fiat 500X certainly struggles
to keep up with the other two subcompact SUVs, but overall, its pros and cons list includes:
Pros
  • An acceleration time of 0-60mph in 9.9 sec, remaining tied with the Jeep Renegade
  • A braking time from 60 mph-0 in 130 ft, remaining neck and neck with both the Chevy Trax and Jeep Renegade
  • Higher-quality, modern controls and aesthetics in its cabin than either the Jeep Renegade or the Chevy Trax
Cons
  • More than 10 cu.ft less cargo space than the other two subcompact SUVs
  • The worst fuel economy of the bunch; 31 mpg on the highway
  • Like the other two, it has the lowest reliability rating possible (1 out of 5) and a poor owner satisfaction rating of 2 out of 5
